BENTONITE
Bentonite Powder
Bentonite powder is a type of clay that has various uses in different industries, such as drilling, civil engineering, cosmetics, and agriculture. It is composed mainly of montmorillonite, a clay mineral that can swell and adsorb water, oil, and other substances.
Bentonite clay is a natural clay with a fine, soft texture. When in contact with water it expands up to Twenty to Forty times its dry volume, It forms a paste when mixed with water’ due to higher surface area -making bentonite a valuable adsorbent. This gives the clay a cohesiveness that makes it greatly increases the plasticity of clay bodies and decreases settling in glazes, making both easier to work with for most applications.
clay may be referred as Calcium Bentonite or Sodium Bentonite, the two varieties exhibiting different properties and thus, uses. There are three main characteristics of Bentonite that make it commercially useful. They include Thixotropy, Swelling, and Adsorption.

APPLICATION
- DRILLING MUD- Lubricate and cool the cutting tools, to remove cuttings, and to help prevent blowouts
- INDER-Bentonite has been widely used as a foundry-sand bond in iron and steel foundries. Commonly used for large castings that use dry moulds, bentonite is also used as a binding agent in the manufacture of iron ore-pellets as used in the steelmaking industry. used as an ingredient in commercial and homemade clay bodies and ceramic glazes.
- PURIFICATION- Bentonites are used for decolorizing various mineral, vegetable, and animal oils. They are also used for clarifying wine, liquor, cider, beer, mead, and vinegar
- ABSORBENT-Bentonite is used in a variety of pet care items such as cat litter to absorb pet waste. It is also used to absorb oils and grease
- CARRIER- Bentonite is used as an inert carrier for pesticides, fertilizer, and fire retardants.
- FILLER-Bentonite is used as a filler in a wide variety of products, including adhesives, cosmetics, paint, rubber, and soaps. It also acts as a stabilizer and extender in these products.
- SEALANT- The property of swelling on contact with water makes sodium bentonite useful as a sealant. foundry- due to high conductivity used in foundry. catalyst & medical application etc.
