Zinc borate

Zinc borates are important chemical products having industrial applications as functional additives in polymers, bio-composites, paints and ceramics. Zinc borate is an inorganic compound used primarily as a flame retardant in various materials. Here’s how it works:

  1. Mechanism: When exposed to heat, zinc borate decomposes endothermically, absorbing energy from the surroundings. It releases waterand forms a protective layer of boron oxide on the surface of combustible materials. This glassy char prevents flame propagation, making it effective as a flame retardant
  2. Applications:
    • Plastics, cellulose fibers, paper, rubbers, and textilescommonly use zinc borate as a flame retardant.
    • It can replace antimony oxidein both halogen-based and halogen-free
    • Zinc borate is also used in paints, adhesives, and pigments.

Remember that zinc borate is an effective fire retardant, and its low toxicity makes it a preferred choice in various applications. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask
